  What Is LIVES?

Lincolnshire Integrated Volunteer Emergency Services (LIVES) is a charity that deals with pre hospital care in Lincolnshire. Its volunteers give up their spare time to attend 999 calls directed through ambulance control. The type of call they go out to depends on whether they are a doctor, paramedic, or first responder (community volunteer). This scheme now handles over 650 calls per month and has over 1600 volunteers. However our aim is to have a LIVES First Responder group, doctor, or paramedic in every community in Lincolnshire so your help is always needed.

  Who Are The Deeping Responders?

Deeping Responders

The Deeping Responder group was formed approximately 4 years ago. The group forms part of the wider LIVES initiative within the county of Lincolnshire.

Deeping Responders consist of 12 volunteers who live in the Deeping area and are on call to support our already stretched ambulance service. The volunteers remain on call from 7pm to 7am every evening throughout the year, including Christmas and New Year.
The group is supported by a regional co-ordinator, in our case Helen Bembridge, who co-ordinates our rota and is our representative for LIVES Headquarters, Helen is also a member of the Deeping Community.
We have a diverse profile of individual members, ranging in age groups and experience; we consist of basic responders and intermediate responders and respond to 999 calls co-ordinated through ambulance control.
It takes us approximately 2 minutes to 4 minutes to reach the casualty in distress from receiving the call from ambulance control and in most cases are already administering medical assistance prior to the ambulance arriving. As you may be aware those early minutes are vital in saving someone’s life.

We are kindly given funds by some aspects of the community to assist us in providing this service, and these funds go towards equipment such as defibrillator’s oxygen cylinders, facemasks and other equipment to help us administer emergency treatment. We also undertake profile raising ourselves as well as other fundraising activities. We currently operate on a budget of £4000 per year.

  Types Of Emergency Calls

A First Responder is a volunteer within a local community team who works on a rota to go out to patients with breathing difficulties, chest pain, heart attack, choking, and collapse.

Once a First Responder has been operational for a year, they have the option to take an Intermediate Course that will equip them with the skills to attend extra calls such as non-entrapment road traffic accidents and trauma.

  Real Life Case Studies

Deeping Responders have responded to numerous calls within a 5-mile radius of the Deepings area, without mentioning individual names here are just some of the cases we have attended.

•  92 years old, unconscious casualty with breathing difficulties and a pulse rate of 30 beats per minute.

•  15 years old trauma casualty with suspected broken leg after a Skateboard accident.

•  37 years old male casualty, breathing difficulty, rapid heart rate, accompanied with involuntary shaking.

Deeping Responders is a volunteer service providing an emergency response 365 evenings a year to the Deeping community. The initiative also provides medical care in those vital early moments when life can be threatened and hangs in the balance. If you are interested in joining or would like more information regarding the Deeping Responders please contact the groups co-ordinator Helen Bembridge on 01778 344330.
